What is Hosting?
I’m sure that during your search for a website host you came across a lot of confusing information with lingo that you don’t understand.
I’m going to keep it short and simple for you.
A website host is a company that puts your site’s content, images, etc. on their server(s) so that it can be displayed online for people to view and consume.
Shared Hosting
Shared hosting is the option that a lot of people choose because it’s normally cheaper than everything else.
But why is it cheaper?
Your site and all of its content is stored on the same server as other websites that share the same host. Basically, you and all of the other customers are sharing the server. Get it?
Pros
- Inexpensive
- Some Unlimited Plans
- More Software (Besides WordPress) Available
Cons
- Renewal Prices Are More Expensive
- Using Too Many Resources Can Shut Down Your Site
Managed WordPress Hosting
Managed WordPress Hosts are staffed with WordPress experts that want you to have the perfect website host.
This is made possible with great security, knowledge, automatic updates, and more awesome features to help you focus on your business while they focus on the technical website stuff.
Shared hosting is like the beginner stuff and managed hosting is where everything is more advanced!
Pros
- Faster Load Times
- More Secure
- Automatic Maintenance
Cons
- More Expensive
- WordPress Only
- Plugin Bans
Shared vs. Managed
Maintenance
If you have a shared hosting place, then you have to set up all of the maintenance, like backups, by yourself.
With managed hosting, your host will take care of your maintenance needs for you (you may need to purchase a maintenance plan with some hosts).
Plugins
Plugins are like apps that you can add to your website to make improvements, make things easier, help with development, back end needs, etc.
Most companies that offer managed WordPress hosing do not allow all plugins to be added for security reasons.
With shared hosting, you can typically add whatever plugin you desire.
Pricing
Honestly, the better cost investment for shared hosting is the only reason why I can see someone choosing it over managed hosting.
